Famous Street Food/Cuisine of Sikkim

Sikkim food indicates the culture of this state which is a mélange of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet. Sikkim food mainly comprises noodles, Gundruk and Sinki soups, thukpas, tomato achar pickle, traditional cottage cheese, fermented soybean, Bamboo shoot, fermented rice product and some other fermented dishes owing to its very cold climate.

Here are some Sikkim food, you should try

1. Momo (Dumplings)

Momos are basically steamed dumplings made of flour dough with fillings. The fillings can be meat of different kinds or mixed vegetables like cabbages, winter squash, carrots, onions, ginger, and sometimes cheese and cottage cheese.

2. Sael Roti

Sael roti is a ring-shaped bread prepared during festival. The dish is made especially for rice lovers, as it is made through fermented rice and then deep-fried. The dish is perfect for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, since it can be eaten with a potato curry or even a meat accompaniment.  

3. Thupka

Thukpa is a hot noodle soup made with mixing vegetables and/or chicken and goes well with the cold weather of northeastern Indo-Tibetan border region. The vegetables used in the preparation are fairly common such as mushrooms, cabbage, onion etc so I thought why not you enjoy this great taste whenever go to Sikkim.

4. Kinema Curry

Kinema Curry is one such delicious dish made with fermented soy bean. This protein-rich super food is also a good source of soluble fibers and vitamins. It is similar to Japanese natto.

5. Sha Phaley

Sha Phaley is a combination of deep-fried flavors, bread, and a whole lot of minced meat. The bread or the pastry is stuffed with a mixture of ground beef, cabbage, and spices. It is then folded into semi-circles and finally deep-fried to perfection. Vegetarians and vegans can relish the Tofu version and enjoy their food.

6. Dal Bhat

Dal Bhat is nothing but a Lentil Soup with Rice. Dal Bhat is a staple food in Sikkim which is served with tarkari (vegetable curry) or meat and chutney. Dal Bhat interestingly is a staple in many kinds of cuisines from South Asia.
