ELEPHANT FALLS

Elephant Falls is situated at the outskirts of the main city of Shillong in the East Khasi Hills District, Upper Shillong. It is almost 12 km away from the Shillong city center.

The Britishers named this fall so owing to the presence of an elephant-shaped rock on one side of the fall. However, the stone disintegrated and was washed away due to an earthquake in 1897.

SEVEN SISTER FALLS

Located just 1 kilometer south of Mawsmai village in East Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya, the Seven Sisters Falls have the reputation of being the fourth highest waterfalls in India. Also known as Nohsngithiang Falls, they form a seven-segmented waterfall, which plunges over the top of limestone cliffs of the Khasi Hills.

The falls only flow during the rainy season. The vibrant colors of the setting sun make for a great sight.

KYNREM FALLS  

Kynrem Falls, located at a distance of 12 km from Cherrapunjee in the East Khasi Hills district is a three-tiered waterfall covering a distance of 305 m vertically.

The source of this fall originates from Thangkharang Park. It’s the 7th highest waterfall in India and due to its seasonal nature; this waterfall is best enjoyed during the monsoons. The roaring din of the cascading fall poses a healthy competition to the noisy cicadas all around the neighbourhood of this fall.

NOHKALIKAI FALLS

Located near Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on earth, the falls are one of the biggest tourist attractions of Meghalaya. The name Nohkalikai can be translated from Khasi to ‘Jump of Ka Likai‘ (ka is a prefix for the female gender in Khasi).

Nohkalikai Falls as one of the highest free leaping waterfalls in the world.

DAINTHLEN FALLS

The view of this waterfall tumbling down from a height of close to 80-90 m is from its source and provides a good opportunity to follow the path all the way to the bottom.

There is a small legend associated with the name of this fall. According to locals, there was a huge demon python by the name of Thlen who was drenched in greed and power.

Some brave men caught the animal and destroyed its hood with a huge stone near this fall. Some of the marks present on the stones are still reminiscent of the violent struggle of that snake, say the naysayers. As a result, this fall got this name.

LANGSHIANG FALLS

Langshiang Falls is located in the West Khasi Hills district at a distance of around 25 km from Nongstoin and 105 km from Shillong in the state of Meghalaya. Being a perennial waterfall due to heavy rainfall in the region, Langshiang Falls remains flooded with water throughout the year.

BIHOP AND BEADON FALLS

The Bishop Falls is a three-tiered waterfall with a height of 135 metres (443 ft). The Bishop’ Falls is often referred to as the twin brother of the Beadon Falls since both tumble down the same escarpment into a yawning gorge.

Beadon Falls and Bishop Falls are off the NH 40 at Mawprem. A narrow road at Mawlai takes one to a view point from where both the falls can be seen together

SWEET FALLS

Sweet Falls (also called Kshaid Weitden, in the native dialect) is a waterfall in Shillong. It lies about 5 km from Happy Valley and is about 96 metres (315 ft) in height.

It is often termed as the “most beautiful” yet “most dangerous” waterfall in Shillong.

It is believed by the local people that this fall is haunted. If people go in odd number, they return in even number. The waterfall has also been the subject of numerous suicides and is infamous for many deaths.
